Before You Step on the Mat

Your yoga practice begins long before your first pose. It begins in the way you speak to yourself, the way you breathe through stillness, and the space you create to listen inward.

At Holding Space Yoga, we believe that showing up for yourself — through affirmations, journaling, meditation, or breathwork — is just as meaningful as the movement itself. These simple rituals can anchor you in presence, build self-awareness, and gently prepare you to step on the mat with intention. Whether it is taking a few deep breaths in the morning, writing down what you are grateful for, or repeating a mantra that resonates with you, each act can become a meaningful beginning.

Tools for the Journey

Yoga does not begin and end on the mat — it is a way of living, breathing, and connecting with yourself throughout the day. These simple tools can support mindfulness, reflection, and ease both in and beyond your yoga practice.

  • Breathwork: Try box breathing — inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold again for 4. Just a few rounds can ease tension, support stress relief, and bring you back to center.

  • Meditation: Begin with just two minutes of stillness. Close your eyes, place one hand on your heart, and silently repeat: “I am here. I am enough.” Let that be your anchor.

  • Journaling Prompt: Take a few quiet moments and write: “What does it mean for me to hold space for myself today?” Let your thoughts flow freely — there are no right or wrong answers.

These small practices can be powerful ways to care for yourself, reconnect, recharge, and realign.
